Wayne Lawrence stands as one of the key figures behind one of the most historic seasons in Central State University Track & Field history. A driving force during the Marauders’ unforgettable 1993 championship campaign, Lawrence played a pivotal role in leading Central State to its first-ever NAIA National Title in men’s track and field.
At the 1993 NAIA Indoor Championships, Lawrence delivered when it mattered most — anchoring the mile relay team alongside Neil DeSilva, Anthony Pryce, and Hugh Powell. Their clutch performance in the final event of the meet secured the victory, pushing CSU to 77 total points and sealing the national championship.
Lawrence’s contributions didn’t stop there. He showcased remarkable versatility and consistency, earning points in multiple events with a third-place finish in the 100-yard run and a fourth-place finish in the 880-yard run. His ability to excel across disciplines made him one of the Marauders’ most dependable and dynamic performers.
That same season, Central State continued its dominance into the outdoor campaign — capturing another national title with 99 points, cementing the program’s place among the nation’s elite.
Beyond the medals and accolades, Wayne Lawrence embodied the spirit of a champion. His leadership, work ethic, and ability to rise in the biggest moments set a standard for excellence that continues to define Central State Track & Field.
