CSU beats Clark Atlanta; earns two wins on opening day of SIAC Crossover

Lady Marauders top Clark Atlanta and three sets; earn two wins in opening day of SIAC Crossover

 
ALBANY, Georgia – The Central State volleyball team beat Clark Atlanta, 3-0, on Thursday's opening day of the SIAC Crossover in Albany, Georgia.

 
Coming off a dominant win over Benedict earlier on Thursday, CSU jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the opening set with Deja Clark recording three straight kills. Clark accounted for seven of CSU's first nine points as her team took a 9-4 lead. The Lady Marauders led by as many as eight points and remained in control on their way to taking the first set, 25-21.

 
Freshman Cormaria Cooksey served to early aces to help CSU jump out to a 6-2 lead in the second set. CAU battled back, managing to tie the game up, 18-18. Kills by Taylor Prude and Imani Elis along with two CSU setting errors gave CAU a 23-21 lead.  The Panthers were unable to close the second set as the team committed four attacking errors down the stretch while CSU tied it back up, 25-25. Kills by Diamond Lester and Akaila Howard sealed the second set for CSU, 27-25.

 
Holding on to a 16-13 lead midway through the third set, CSU closed the match with a 9-0 run as a Tyra Barber kill sealed the Lady Marauder victory, 25-13.

 
Clark led CSU with 13 kills, two service aces and six blocks. Cooksey finished with nine kills and five digs.

 
With the victory, CSU improves to 4-9 overall with a 4-4 record in SIAC play.

 
CSU will continue conference play on Friday with matches against Paine, Savannah State and Fort Valley State.
