Central State opens season with 70-61 win over Christian Brothers
 

WILBERFORCE, Ohio – The Central State Marauders opened the 2019-20 season with a 70-61 win over Christian Brothers on Friday night.
 
 
Playing CBU in the home opener for the fourth consecutive season, CSU jumped out to a 33-19 lead at halftime thanks to a barrage a three point makes late in the opening half. CSU converted five shots from beyond the arc while CBU made just one of 11 attempts.


 
CSU maintained the momentum throughout the early stages of the second half, increasing their lead to 23 by the 11:45 mark. CBU fought back late as a Daryl Lewis three pointer cut the CSU lead down, 64-60, with 1:55 to play. After a timeout, CSU regained its composure. Theo Howard found a streaking Michael Reeves down low for the layin with 1:15 left and CSU converted its final four free throw attempts to seal the victory.
 
 
CSU was impressive from the free throw line with a 15-17 performance while CBU made just seven in 13 trips.


 
CSU was led by freshman Darweshi Hunter's game-high 15 points while senior point guard Tom Johnson finished with 12 points, nine assists, eight rebounds and five steals. Reeves scored 14 points and collected six rebounds.
 
 
CBU was paced by 12 points from Tylar Haynes.
 
 
CSU and CBU will play again on Sunday afternoon in Memphis, Tennessee.

CSU freshman Darweshi Hunter has impressed in his first few weeks as a Marauder. Hunter scored a game-high 35 points in Tuesday night's exhibition game against Div. I program Wright State University and led his team again with 15 points on Friday.


CSU Alumni Director Keith Perkins served as the Marauders honorary coach. Perkins improved his all-time coaching record to 1-0.
 
 
With Friday's result, CBU now holds a 5-3 edge in the all-time series which dates back to 2001.
 
 
CSU was picked to finish fifth in the SIAC West Division.
 
 
CBU was picked to finish tenth in the Gulf South Conference.
