Martin leads Marauders past rival Wilberforce, 65-60

WILBERFORCE, Ohio – Playing their tradition rival in the Wilberforce University Bulldogs, the Central State Marauders came away with a 65-60 win on Monday afternoon.

With the win, CSU improves to 4-16 on the season. WU falls to 4-12 overall.

Playing in a sold out Beacom/Lewis Gymnasium, Wilberforce claimed an early 17-11 lead. CSU responded with a 10-3 run as Martin Oliver knocked down a three-pointer on the fastbreak to tie the game, 20-20. CSU eventually built a lead of as many as six in the first half before taking a 33-31 lead at the intermission.

With margin remaining two, 37-35, in favor of CSU, WU went on a 11-2 run to take a 46-39 edge with 13:22 left to play. WU maintained a seven point cushion until the 9:19 mark as Oliver scored the next four points and Josiah Wilson finished a fastbreak dunk to bring CSU within one, 52-51, with 7:37 to go. CSU kept within a one point striking distance as the teams entered the final stretch. A Quinton Glaspie free throw knotted the game, 58-58, with 2:10 left on the clock. Glaspie added two more makes from the line to give his team a two-point lead with 1:42 left. LeJuance Marshall scored on the other end to bring the score level, 60-60.

With both teams coming up empty on their next offensive possessions, Glaspie was sent to the line again and calmly knocked down both shot attempts as CSU took a 62-60 lead with 23 seconds left. On the ensuing inbound, WU's Isaiah Jones was called for the offensive foul to give the ball back to CSU. Randal Clarkson, Jr. split a pair of free throws to make the score 63-60. WU turned the ball over again on its next possession but a missed dunk attempt by Tom Johnson gave WU new life. Any hopes WU had of potentially tying the game evaporated when Deion Gatson missed his free throw. With six seconds left, WU sent Glaspie to the line again. The sophomore from Detroit converted both free throws to seal the victory for his team.

While WU converted nine of 22 three point attempts, CSU was able to counter by attacking the lane and outscoring the Bulldogs, 34-20, in the paint.

Oliver led all players with a game-high 18 points while making seven of his nine shot attempts. He also pulled down a career-high 14 rebounds. Glaspie was four-of-eight from the field and seven-of-11 from the free throw line to finish with 15 points along with nine rebounds. Johnson led all players with seven assists and four steals to go along with his eight points.

Jones led the Bulldogs with 16 points and four rebounds. Marshall added 14 points.

The Marauders will host Wayne State on Wednesday at 7 pm.

Quotes from Coach Joseph Price

"We had a tremendous effort from our guys today. It was a great game and a great environment. We all really appreciate our fans, cheerleaders, dancers and marching band for providing us with the extra motivation to play hard for the full 40 minutes."

"We knew today would be a 40 minute grind. Wilberforce always plays us really tough and Coach Waters made our guys go out and earn this win."

"We did a good job of converting WU's turnovers into points throughout the first half. I would have liked to see our players take care of the ball a little better than we did today. We finished with 14 turnovers which is something that we will continue to emphasize as we enter the final stretch of the regular season."

"Quinton came off the bench and gave us a solid performance with 15 points and nine rebounds. He did a good job of stepping up and making those final two free throws to help us come out on top."

"Martin Oliver probably had his best game in a Marauder uniform. He played with a high level of energy and finished with a career high 14 rebounds. I am proud of him and appreciate his efforts today."
