Turnovers to blame in Central State's loss to Morehouse

Turnovers to blame in Central State's loss to Morehouse

WILBERFORCE, Ohio – The Central State Marauders were unable to overcome 26 turnovers in Monday night's 69-61 loss to nationally ranked Morehouse College.

Dropping its seventh straight contest, CSU is now 1-10 overall with a 0-6 mark in the SIAC. MC improves to 9-1 on the year with a 3-1 ledger in conference play.

Morehouse leaned on a balance scoring attack to build a 12 point lead at the 5:59 mark of the first half. CSU battled back with an 8-0 run capped off by a Dorian Crutcher fastbreak dunk to cut the lead down, 30-26. James Walker knocked down a shot from beyond the arc to give Morehouse a 33-26 lead at the intermission.

Crutcher and Micheal Reeves sparked a CSU 14-2 run to open the second half. Reeves opened the CSU scoring with a dunk. Crutcher knocked down three shots from three-point range as CSU took a 43-37 lead at the 13:26 mark.

Morehouse regained its composure with an 11-0 run. A Omar Alston basket gave MC a 48-43 lead 10:10 to play. The MC shooters helped the Tigers seize control as the team knocked down its next four three-point attempts to increase their lead to 14 with 5:42 to play.

Morehouse maintained a double-figure lead until a late Oliver Martin basket cut the deficit down to eight. By that time, the game was predetermined as Morehouse dribbled off the remaining time on the clock on their way to their fifth straight win.

Morehouse capitalized off of CSU's 26 giveaways by outscoring the Marauders, 34-15, in points off turnovers.

Alston led Morehouse with 17 points, 13 rebounds, five assists and five steals. James Walker added 16 points which included a four-of-six shooting night from the three-point line.

Crutcher led the Marauders with a game-high 20 points. He also tallied six rebounds and three steals. Oliver came off the bench to score 11 points while Reeves contributed 10 points.

CSU will enter the holiday break before returning to action on the road against Goshen College on Dec. 28.

Quotes from Coach Joseph Price

"I thought we did a good job of moving the ball on the offensive end tonight. Our guys played hard against one of the top teams in NCAA Division II basketball. Moving forward, we have to do a better job of valuing every possession and taking care of the ball."

"The turnovers really were the difference tonight. It is extremely frustrating because we are right there in the majority of our games. We will get some rest over the break and come back refreshed and ready to get back to work."

Notes

Morehouse is currently ranked No. 15 in the latest NCAA Div. II National Poll.

CSU finished with a season-high 10 blocked shots on Monday.
