Marauders edged by Fort Valley State, 68-65

Fort Valley State outlasts Marauders, 68-65
 
FORT VALLEY, Georgia – The Central State Marauders fell to Fort Valley State University, 68-65, on Monday night
 
The latest loss drops CSU to 1-5 overall and 0-2 in SIAC play. FVSU earned its first victory on the year, improving to 1-8 and 1-1 in the conference.
 
In a game with 17 lead changes, FVSU concluded the first half on a 5-0 run to take a 36-32 lead at the intermission. FVSU kept a narrow lead until CSU's Dwight Richards, Jr. scored in the paint to put the Marauders up 51-50 with 8:47 to play. Richards hit back-to-back shots from beyond the arc to help extend the CSU lead to five.
 
Later in the half, Jaylin McMillan responded for FVSU with two three-pointers of his own as the Wildcats built a 63-58 lead with 1:17 to play. After two Richards, Jr. free throws, McMillan set up Brenton Cliette-Jordan for a dunk as FVSU went back up by five.
 
CSU countered with a three-point make from Orion Monford. Martin Oliver stole the ball from Cliette-Jordan on the next possession and Michael Reeves scored on the other end to tie the game, 65-65, with 14 seconds left.
 
K'Viontae Williams came up with the game-winning play for FVSU, converting a layup and drawing the foul with four seconds left. Williams calmly knocked down his free throw to give the Wildcats a three-point lead. CSU's Dorian Crutcher failed to convert a contested three-pointer at the buzzer as CSU dropped its fourth straight road game.
 
FVSU converted 50% of its shot attempts compared to a 38% shooting performance from the Marauders.
 
McMillan led the Wildcats with a game-high 25 points along with six assists and five rebounds.
 
Richards, Jr. led CSU's efforts with 20 points and seven rebounds.
 
CSU continues conference play on Thursday at Lane College.
