Jakiel Wells

Jakiel Wells was named Central State University's assistant men's basketball coach in July of 2024.

Born and raised in Toledo, Ohio, Jakiel Wells has always had a passion for basketball and leadership. A standout player at Toledo St. Francis, Wells earned an opportunity to play college basketball at Shawnee State University. During his time at Shawnee State, he was a 4-year team captain, demonstrating leadership on and off the court. Wells played a pivotal role in the team’s success, including leading them to a National Championship victory with a 27-game winning streak, starting in every game that season.

In addition to his on-court responsibilities, Wells was instrumental in organizing off-season workout schedules and contributing to the recruiting process, showcasing his dedication and strategic mindset.

Driven by the desire to change lives, Wells views coaching as more than just a profession instead a calling. Inspired by the coaches who impacted his life, Wells sees himself as a modern-day superhero, committed to servant leadership. Wells believes in making a difference both on and off the court, preparing his players for success in life, not just in basketball.

Beyond the court, Wells’ greatest joy comes from his family. Wells is deeply devoted to his fiancé, Caitlin, and their two children, Ja’Liel and Jukai. Their love and support are the driving forces behind Wells’ dedication, both in his personal life and his coaching career. Wells cherishes every moment with them and strives to be the best role model for his children, teaching them the same values of hard work, discipline, and compassion that he instills in his players.

Wells graduated with a degree in Sports Management from Shawnee State University, equipping him with a strong foundation in the business and administrative aspects of sports, complementing his on-court experience.
