Coach Dennis Hopkins’ coaching career reflects a deep commitment to both the sport of basketball and to the development of young athletes. He began his coaching journey at Springfield Christian Academy in 1994 as an assistant where he laid the groundwork for his future success before leading the junior varsity team in 1996 for a season before taking over the varsity squad. His tenure at Springfield Christian was marked by a significant turnaround, culminating in a remarkable 23-3 record in the 1999-2000 season and securing multiple titles, including the conference regular season and tournament titles, as well as the Michigan Association of Christian Schools state title.
Following this, Coach Hopkins transitioned to a role at Oakland University as the men's basketball administrative assistant under Coach Greg Kampe. During this time, he furthered his education, earning a Master’s of Sports Science with a focus in coaching from the United States Sports Academy.
In 2002, he took on the role of head coach for the Oakland Christian JV boys' program and later, in 2004, assumed leadership of the Lancer varsity program. Under his guidance, the program saw substantial improvement, peaking with a 24-2 record in the 2007-2008 season. That year, the Lancers achieved a series of milestones including an undefeated MIAC league season, the MHSAA District trophy, and the program’s second-ever MHSAA Regional trophy. For his exceptional work, Coach Hopkins was named the Dream Team Coach of the Year and MIAC Coach of the Year in 2008.
Coach Hopkins’ tenure at Oakland Christian was marked by sustained success, including three MIAC conference championships, seven District titles, and one Regional title. His impact was recognized multiple times with Coach of the Year honors, including five MIAC Coach of the Year awards.
Beyond coaching, Coach Hopkins has dedicated himself to the broader basketball community through his role with the Basketball Coaches Association of Michigan. As the Assistant Executive Director and an Executive Board Member, he has contributed significantly to the association, including his roles as Annual Coaches Clinic Co-Director, President, and Regional Director.
For his contributions to basketball, Coach Hopkins was awarded the Thomas Hursey Distinguished Service Award by the Basketball Coaches Association of Michigan.
As a head coach, Coach Hopkins has recorded 350 victories reflecting his effectiveness and dedication as a coach. Coach Hopkins is married to Wendy, and they have three children – Danielle, Katie, and Trent.
