  • Title
    Defensive Line Coach

Head Coach Tony Carter is proud to announce the hiring of Brandon McKinney as Defensive Line Coach at Central State University. “Coach McKinney brings a championship mindset, unmatched NFL experience, and a deep passion for player development,” Carter stated. “His ability to connect with our student-athletes and push them to be their best—on and off the field—is what sets him apart. I’m thrilled to have Coach McKinney on staff.

For McKinney it is a return to CSU.  A respected member of the CSU football staff 2018, McKinney was elevated to Defensive Coordinator in 2020 while maintaining his role leading the strength and conditioning program. Hailing from Dayton, Ohio, McKinney was a standout defensive tackle at Chaminade Julienne High School, where he earned two Associated Press All-State honors and was recognized as a PrepStar All-American.

McKinney continued his playing career at Michigan State University, where he totaled 93 tackles and 2.5 sacks. His junior season saw him post a career-high 42 tackles, finishing among team leaders. After earning his degree in sociology in 2005, McKinney went on to play professionally in the NFL with the San Diego Chargers, Baltimore Ravens, and Indianapolis Colts.

He began his NFL journey with the Chargers, appearing in six games during the 2006 season and contributing in a playoff matchup against the New England Patriots. In 2007, he played in 14 games, recording 35 tackles and a pass breakup. McKinney then joined the Baltimore Ravens in 2008, where he was part of one of the league’s most dominant defenses. Over the next three seasons, he played in numerous postseason games and helped anchor a top-ranked defensive unit. His final NFL stint was with the Indianapolis Colts, where he spent parts of the 2012, 2013, and 2014 seasons.

Off the field, McKinney is just as impactful. He is the founder of the BJ Kids 91 Foundation, which provides programs that promote academic enrichment, life skills, health, and well-being for youth. His commitment to community development and mentorship reflects the values he instills in the CSU football program every day.

With McKinney’s leadership, toughness, and heart, Central State’s defense continues to rise as one of the most competitive units in the conference.
