Central State vs. Cedarville Recap: September 7, 2024

In a match held at the Callan Athletic Center in Cedarville, OH, Cedarville University extended their undefeated streak to 4-0 with a decisive 3-0 victory over Central State. Despite a spirited effort from Central State, they were unable to overcome Cedarville's consistent play, with set scores of 25-15, 25-15, and 25-18.  The youthful Marauders show that they are just on the cusp of being competitive, but timely errors have cost the Marauders early in the season.  

Set 1: Cedarville 25, Central State 15

After a strong start for the Marauders, Cedarville came on quickly after falling behind 10-7, taking control and never looking back. They established a comfortable lead with effective attacking and solid defense. Cedarville's Haley Koch was particularly impressive, racking up 8 kills on 11 attempts for a .636 hitting percentage. In contrast, Central State struggled offensively, finishing the set with just .067 hitting percentage. Casey Williams, recorded 5 kills, but Central State's lack of cohesion allowed Cedarville to win the set comfortably.

Set 2: Cedarville 25, Central State 15

The second set saw more of the same from Cedarville, who continued their dominant play. They maintained a high level of efficiency with a .522 hitting percentage and balanced contributions from multiple players. Greta Blakemore contributed significantly with 7 kills on 12 attempts, showcasing her offensive prowess. Central State, meanwhile, remained unable to find their rhythm, with their hitting percentage dipping slightly to .036 in this set. The set ended with Cedarville securing another 25-15 win.

Set 3: Cedarville 25, Central State 18

Central State showed a bit more resistance in the third set, managing to push the score to a closer margin. However, Cedarville's offensive firepower proved too much. The match's final set saw Cedarville's hitting efficiency drop slightly to .250, but they continued to play solid defense and capitalize on Central State's mistakes. Nevaeh Brownlee and Taylor Hughes of Central State made notable contributions, but Cedarville's overall team performance, led by Cassi Shields with 9 kills and a .294 hitting percentage, clinched their straight-set victory.
