Morehead State holds on for a 17-10 win over Marauders

Morehead, KY:  In a gritty showdown to open up the college football season, Morehead State edged out Central State with a 17-10 victory, despite a hard-fought battle that saw both defenses holding firm for most of the game.

The game started with both teams trading defensive punches, but Morehead State managed to establish an early lead. Their first touchdown came from running back Chance Harris, who found the end zone with a 20-yard burst. Central State answered back with a solid drive ending on a Kendall Boney 1 yard touchdown tying the score at 7.  After a Morehead State field goal, the Marauders were on the hunt for a half-time lead but had to settle for a field goal as time expired in the first half, with Jose Chaires connecting from 31 yards out.

The second half saw Morehead State's offense struggling to gain traction, but they managed to capitalize on Central State's mistakes. Despite a solid per rush average performance from CSU, led by Javarus Leach and his 59 yards, Central State's passing game couldn't balance the attack.  Starting Quarterback Kendall Boney  was not able to get things going in the second half and finished with 119 yards and was intercepted once.

The statistical battle was close, with Morehead State edging out Central State in total offense (283 yards to 247) and converting on more third downs (7 of 17) compared to Central State's (2 of 12). The play of the game, however, was the defensive stand by Morehead State in the final minutes, ensuring that their slim lead held up until the final whistle.

Morehead State's balanced approach and consistently solid defense led them to a season opening win.

In the loss the offensive leaders for the Marauders were Javarus Leach who rushed for 60 yards on just 6 carries.  Brandon Brock caught 4 passes for 43 yards.

Defensively, Jalil Lenore led the Marauders with 10 tackles, TJ Tucker had 8 tackles and Abraham Daniels finished with 6.
