Kentucky State outlasts Marauders, 68-64
WILBERFORCE, Ohio - In the renewal of a historic HBCU rival on the hardwood, the Kentucky State Thorobreds edged the Central State Marauders, 68-64, on Thursday.
CSU struggled to find the bottom of the net in the first half, going 9 of 32 from the field (28.1%). Trailing 30-22 entering the second half, CSU began to find some offensive momentum. Three-pointers by
Lavar Miller and Kameron Iovry helped CSU erase the eight-point deficit. By the 13:25 mark, CSU had its largest lead of five, 46-41. The teams traded baskets down the stretch with the score being tied on six occasions. Tied at 62-62 with 3:04 to go, CSU managed just one field foal in the final 180 seconds while KSU's Montrell Jacobs made all four free throws attempts and Querrion Gadsen scored inside to give KSU a six-point edge with 1:02 left on the clock.
Willie Jackson added a late layin for the Marauders before ultimately falling on the home floor by four points.
CSU was outrebounded, 43-32, giving KSU a 17-9 edge in second chance points. KSU also had the edge at the free throw line, making 12 of 17 attempts (70.6%). CSU managed just eight trips to the line and knocking down six (75%).
Miller led all players on the court with 19 points.
Alex Dotson finished with 13 points and six rebounds.
Michael Reeves added 10 points on a efficient five for six shooting night.
KSU was led by Delvonte McCloud's 12 points and eight rebounds.
The loss drops CSU to 6-10 overall and 4-7 in the SIAC. KSU improves to 6-9 on the year with a 3-5 ledger in conference play.
CSU hosts Tuskegee on Saturday at 3 pm.
