Central State volleyball opens SIAC play with wins over Miles and Tuskegee



MEMPHIS, Tennessee – The Central State Lady Marauder volleyball team opened up SIAC competition with wins over Miles and Tuskegee on Friday.
 

In a 3-0 win over Miles, CSU was dominant in the first set, jumping out to a 19-4 lead and cruising to a 25-15 win. Leading 15-10, the Lady Marauders went on a 10-2 run to close out the second set with a 25-12 win.
 
 
Miles contended with CSU in the early stages of the third set. With the score knotted, 14-14, a 6-0 run sparked by four service aces from Kiarra Rosales gave the Lady Marauders a 20-14 lead. CSU closed out the match with a 5-0 run to take the straight set victory.
 

CSU's offensive attack was led by the freshmen tandem of Jayden Sanders and Elaina Brooks. Sanders led all players with 13 kills. Brooks finished with 10. Kayla Adams had 27 assists and Cristina Reyes led the CSU defensive efforts with 12 digs.

 
The success of the first match carried over into the second as CSU jumped out to a 6-1 lead over Tuskegee in the first set and was in full control on their way to a 25-14 win. TU kept things close through the early stages of the second set. With the score 16-14 in favor of CSU, the Lady Marauders went on an 8-2 run and an eventual 25-16 victory. In the third set with CSU leading 12-10, the Lady Marauders benefited from six TU errors combined with three kills from Ajanae' Cressey and two from Hailey White to take the match, 3-0.

 
Cressey, who was named SIAC Offensive Player of the Week on Wednesday, finished the match with 18 kills. Coming off a solid performance against Miles, Adams recorded 32 more assists against Tuskegee along with three blocks and 10 digs.

 
Friday's results propel CSU's overall record to 3-2 with a 2-0 mark in conference play.

 
CSU will conclude this weekend's SIAC West Division Round-Up against defending conference champion Spring Hill on Saturday morning at 9 am. This weekend's SIAC matches are being hosted by LeMoyne-Owen College in Memphis, Tennessee.
