Marauders struggle in loss to Alabama A&M

Central State struggles in lopsided Gulf Coast Challenge loss to Alabama A&M
 

MOBILE, Alabama – The Alabama A&M Bulldogs handled the Central State Marauders, 63-20, in Saturday night's Gulf Coast Challenge in Mobile, Alabama.

The non-conference loss drops Central State to 1-3 overall while Alabama A&M improves to 4-2 overall

HOW IT HAPPENED

 
1st Quarter

AAMU scored touchdowns on its first two drives of the game. Jordan Bentley rushed for a 10 yard touchdown at the 13:22 mark. Bentley scored again from three yards out at the 6:53 mark (AAMU 14-0).
 
 
CSU found the end zone on a 7 play – 76 yard drive capped off by a 28-yard pass from Frank Cocio to Dalane Brown II at the 3:15 mark of the first quarter (AAMU 14-7).
 


 
2nd Quarter


AAMU quarterback Aqeel Glass connected with Kendrick Johnson for a 27-yard touchdown to put the Bulldogs back up by 14 with 12:37 to play in the first half (AAMU 21-7).
 
 
The Bulldogs took full control thanks to a 5 play – 56 yard touchdown drive as Glass found an open receiver from 5-yards out with 7:34 remaining in the second quarter (AAMU 28-7).
 
 
After recovering a fumbled punt inside the AAMU 5-yard line, CSU fullback Darius Meadors broke the endzone from 1 yard out with 2:24 remaining in the half (AAMU 28-14).
 
 
CSU surrendered two touchdowns in the final 2:24 of the half as Glass threw for touchdowns of 35 yards and 26 yards to give the Bulldogs a 28-point cushion at halftime (AAMU 42-14).


 

3rd Quarter



The Bulldogs added on to the lead in the in the third quarter. AAUMU opened the half on a 75-yard touchdown drive as Bentley recorded his third touchdown of the night from two-yards out (AAMU 49-14).
 
 
Zabrian Moore hauled in a 33 yard touchdown pass from backup quarterback Tyrone Bell with 4:34 to play in the third quarter (AAMU 56-14).

 


4th Quarter


The Bulldogs scored their final touchdown at the 10:19 mark of the fourth quarter when Demrarco Gibson intercepted a Cocio pass and went the other way for a 42-yard interception return (AAMU 63-14).
 
CSU added a late touchdown with 18 second left as running back Terrasris Saffold drove into the end zone from six yards out to end a 43 yard drive (AAMU 63-20).




 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE


 
AAMU totaled just three punts in the game and were 4-4 in red-zone scoring chances. The CSU offense was 2-2 in the red zone but committed three turnovers.
 
 
AAMU receiver Zabrian Moore led all receivers with eight receptions for 218 yards and two touchdowns.
 
 
AAMU quarterback Aqeel Glass completed 22 of 26 passes for 339 yards and four touchdowns.


 
CSU senior running back Terraris Saffold, who ranks No, 2 in NCAA Div. II in all-purpose yards, totaled 279 on Saturday (98 rushing, 273 returng, 6 receiving).



CSU linebacker Kailen Abrams led the Marauders with 11 tackles.
 
 
CSU receiver Dalane Brown II, who leads the SIAC in receiving yards, caught three passes for 64 yards and a touchdown.
 
 
Saturday night's game was played in Ladd-Peebles Stadium, home to the Reese's Senior Bowl.
 
 
CSU is 3-4-1 in the all-time series against AAMU dating back to 1977.
 
 
AAMU, a FCS-Div I program and member of the SWAC, is 2-0 against SIAC opponents this season (Central State, Morehouse).
 
 
CSU is currently 1-0 in the SIAC. SIAC play continued for Central State on Oct. 12 (Fort Valley State).

The Marauders will return home to host Edward Water on Saturday , October 5 at 1 pm in McPherson Memorial Stadium.
