Lady Marauders take down rival Kentucky State, 66-53


 
FRANKFORT, Kentucky – Playing their rival for the second time in three days, the Central State Lady Marauders beat the Kentucky State Thorobreds, 66-53, on Monday night.
 
With the win, the Lady Marauders improve their record to 9-15 with a 6-9 ledger in the SIAC. KSU falls to 13-11 on the year with a 6-9 conference record.
 
KSU scored the first five points of the contest before CSU responded with an 8-0 run. CSU built their lead up to 10 as a Takyra Gilbert three-pointer ended the opening quarter with the score at 20-10. Baskets by Gilbert and Falon Edwards helped CSU extend the lead to 16 midway through the second quarter. KSU managed to cut the deficit back down to 10 as the teams went into the locker rooms with CSU ahead, 35-25.
 
CSU maintained a comfortable lead through the early stages of the third period. Up 45-32, CSU allowed KSU to climb back into contention as the Thorobreds manufactured a 9-0 run to end the quarter.
 
Jaeda Davis snapped KSU's run with a three-point field goal to open the fourth quarter to give her team a seven-point advantage. KSU methodically chopped the CSU lead down to three, 50-47, after a Jessie Key basket at the 6:11 mark. CSU answered with a 9-2 run to regain momentum. Two Chervelle Cox free throws gave CSU a 59-49 lead with 1:47 remaining. CSU closed the game by scoring on four of their final five possessions in route to the 13-point victory.
 
CSU forced KSU into 32 turnovers, recording 12 steals in the contest.
 
Edwards finished with a game-high 20 points. Cox added 14 points, six rebounds, and four assists. Davis scored 13 points and Gilbert chipped in with 11 points.
 
Key led the KSU scoring with 13 points.
 
CSU will return home this Saturday to play Tuskegee at 1 pm.
