Lady Marauders lose to Union, 75-69
Â
WILBERFORCE, Ohio – A late comeback attempt by Central State fell short in Saturday's 75-69 loss to Union.
Â
Â
CSU falls to 2-8 overall while UU improves to 8-2 on the season.
Â
The Lady Marauders struggled from the field early on, shooting 25% in the opening quarter. Powered by Jada Smith's eight points, UU took a 16-11 lead into the second period.
Â
Union built their lead to 35-26 by halftime thanks, in part, to a 46% shooting performance in the second quarter.
Â
Â
Union maintained momentum throughout the third quarter as Jaelencia Williams began to insert her will with three blocks on CSU shot attempts. CSU made just four of 18 shot attempts in the third frame and trailed by 16 entering the fourth quarter with their leading scorer
Brooke Spaulding sidelined for the rest of the game with a lower body injury.
Â
Â
CSU battled back into the game in the final frame. A three-pointer by
Shania Kelly cut the Union lead down to 10 with 5:29 to play. After trading baskets,
Takyra Gilbert knocked down a shot from three-point range to bring CSU within seven, 65-58, with 3:09 remaining. A Emily Beard three-pointer from the corner put Union back up by 10 with 1:30 to play. Union sealed the victory from the free throw line by converting five of six in the final 60 seconds on their way to their fifth straight victory.
Â
Â
Smith and Williams led Union with a combined 46 points. Smith finished with a game-high 24 points to go along with six assists and five rebounds. Williams was 10 of 20 from the field for 22 points. She also grabbed 14 rebounds and blocked five shots.
Â
Â
Gilbert led CSU with 17 points, six rebounds and five assists.
