CSU's second half effort comes up short in 34-28 loss to Kentucky State

WILBERFORCE, Ohio – The Central State Marauders lost the final game of the year to rival Kentucky State, 34-28, on Saturday.

The Marauders scored all 28 of their points in the second half but were unable to come all the way back as they end 2019 with an overall record of 3-7 overall and 2-4 in SIAC play. KSU improves to 6-3 on the year and 3-3 in SIAC play.

After a fumble recovery by KSU's Jimmy Edmonds, the Thorobred offense score from 10 yards out on a run from Brendan Lawler (KSU 7-0).

KSU took a two touchdown lead with a 80-yard scoring drive capped off by a three-yard run from Curtis Coneway (KSU 14-0).

In a game with passing at a premium, KSU quarterback Jaylen Myers found an open Jonathan Powell for a 39 yard score at the 6:43 mark of the third quarter (KSU 21-0).

CSU capitalized off of a fumble recovery and went 50 yards and five plays as receiver
Kevin Greenhow caught the ball over the defender for the Marauder score with 3:53 left in the third quarter (KSU 21-7).

CSU struck again through the air as
Derell Williams found
Dalane Brown II for a 31 yard touchdown to cut the deficit down to seven (KSU 21-7).

KSU reclaimed control of the game thanks to time consuming touchdown drives of 67 yards and 81 yards to go up by 20 (KSU 34-14).

Two late rushing touchdowns by Williams brought CSU back within six with 3:05 to play (KSU 34-28).

After successfully fielding the ensuing kickoff, KSU was able to run off the remaining time in regulation with effective running from Brett Sylve, Lawler and Coneway en route to the win.

10 senior Central State student-athletes played in their final collegiate game on Saturday. The players were honored by coaches, staff and fans during pre-game.

CSU hosted rival KSU on its campus for the first time since the 2013 season. The teams had a lengthy series played in the Circle City Classic before playing at KSU in 2018.

CSU is 36-23-1 against KSU in the all-time series dating back to 1947.

Kevin Greenhow had his best game of the season, hauling in seven catches for 96 yards and one touchdown.

Kailen Abrams led all players with 16 tackles. CSU sophomore
Jaquan Buckner finished with a career-high 11 tackles.

The Marauders will have the winter months to prepare for the 2020 season. CSU is scheduled to open up the 2020 season at the Black College Football Hall of Fame Classic on September 6
th against Howard University. Additional information about the 2020 schedule will be released in the spring.
