LeMoyne-Owen edges Lady Marauders in overtime

LeMoyne-Owen edges Central State in overtime, 93-88


WILBERFORCE, Ohio – The Lady Marauders surrendered a 11-point second half lead and eventually lost to LeMoyne-Owen in overtime, 93-88, on Saturday.


CSU's latest setback drops the team to 7-13 overall with a 4-7 mark in SIAC play. LOC improves to 11-9 overall with a 9-4 ledger in the SIAC.


LOC jumped out to a 7-0 run to open the game. After a timeout from CSU head coach LaTonya McDole, CSU guard Takyra Gilbert went on to make five of her next six shots to help her team take a 24-15 lead entering the second period.
 
LOC battled back in the second quarter by making 62.5% of their shot attempts. Lamontazia Blair led the Magicians with eight points in the quarter as LOC cut the deficit down to three,45-42, by halftime.
 
Daesjah Ely scored the first five points of the second half to increase the CSU lead to 50-42. CSU led by as many as 11 midway through the quarter. LOC later responded with a 12-4 run to end the quarter and trailed by just two points, 65-63, at the end of 30 minutes.
 
Dana Gettis gave LOC its first lead since the early stages of the game with a mid-range jumper to put her team up, 68-67. The lead changed hands four times in the fourth period. With 36 seconds left, Gilbert drew a foul and knocked down two free throws to put CSU ahead, 78-76. LOC went to their leading scorer in Gettis on the next possession who went on to hit a contested jumper from the top of the key to tie the game and force extra time.
 
LOC opened overtime by converting their first four shots and led 87-82 with 1:26 to play. After both offenses turned the ball over, Blair stepped up with a big defensive play for LOC, stealing the ball from Gilbert and converting the fastbreak layup to give her team a 89-84 lead with 29 seconds left. CSU came up empty on its next offensive trip down the floor and LOC knocked down its final four free throw attempts to seal the victory.
 
LOC finished the game shooting 50% from the field compared to CSU's 44% shooting performance. Led by the play of Chrissah Shae, LOC's bench outscored the CSU reserves, 38-4.
 
Gettis led all plaers with 26 points and 12 rebounds. Blair finished with 19 points. Shae added 18 points and seven rebounds.
 
Gilbert led CSU with 21 points and nine assists. Falon Edwards finished with 18 points. Davis scored 17 points. Ely, who made her first start of the season, had 15 points and six rebounds. Chervelle Cox added 13 points, six rebounds and four steals.
 
CSU will host Lane College on Monday at 5:30 pm
