Gilbert leads CSU to 114-88 win over Salem


WILBERFORCE, Ohio – The Lady Marauders recorded their highest offensive output of the season in a 114-88 win over Salem University on Wednesday.


With the win, CSU improves to 7-12 overall. SU drops to 3-15 on the year.
 
Trailing 13-9 at the 5:10 mark of the first quarter, the Lady Marauders closed the quarter on a 14-0 run capped off by a Sandra Guilford basket to give CSU a 23-13 lead. The Lady Marauders extended their lead to 16 midway through the second quarter. Up by 12 with 1:59 left in the half, CSU surrendered a 17-2 lead and trailed 50-47 at halftime.
 
CSU regained its form in the second half. CSU went on a 13-2 run sandwhiched by four free throws from Takyra Gilbert. Salem battled back to cut the deficit down, 62-58, before a Jaeda Davis basket sparked CSU's 14-0 run to up the lead to 76-58. CSU remained in control taking a 80-65 edge into the final quarter.
 
CSU did not let up in the fourth quarter. Baskets from Gilbert and Davis helped CSU extend its lead to 24 with 5:49 to play.  The CSU lead ballooned to as many as 28 and the Lady Marauders coasted to the 26-point victory.
 
The Marauders outscored SU, 60-34, in the paint. CSU also converted 48% of its shot attempts compared to SU's 38.8% shooting performance.
 
Six CSU players scored in double-figures. Gilbert recorded a season-high 33 points and 12 assists. She also tallied five rebounds and four steals. Davis added 17 points and five rebounds off the bench. Sandra Guilford scored 16 points and grabbed six rebounds. Daesjah Ely and Chervelle Cox recorded 14 points each. Cox also knotched her eighth double-double of the season with 10 rebounds. Falon Edwards contributed with 12 points and eight rebounds.
 
SU was paced by 26 points from Precious Price.
 
CSU will return home to host LeMoyne-Owen on Saturday at 1 pm.
 
 
 
 
 
 
Notes
 
CSU's 114 points is the most the team has scored since Feb. 7 of 2015.
 
Gilbert is averaging 18.8 ppg in her last five games.
 
CSU sweeps the season series with Salem, 2-0.
 
Wednesday was the first time CSU has scored 100 or more points this season.
