Lady Marauders unable to keep up in 98-67 loss to Union

Lady Marauders fall to Union, 98-67
 
WILBERFORCE, Ohio – The Central State Lady Marauders struggled to keep up with a hot-shooting Union University in a 98-67 loss on Thursday night.
 
With loss, CSU falls to 2-1 overall. The Bulldogs of Union, who entered the game ranked No. 2 in the D2SIDA National Poll, improve to 3-0 on the season.
 
The teams traded baskets throughout the first 10 minutes of play with the Lady Marauders taking a 21-19 lead into the second quarter.
 
The Union shooters soon found their mark, converting five of six three-point shots as the Bulldogs exploded for 33 points in the second quarter to take a 52-38 lead at halftime.
 
CSU cut the deficit down to eight after a Chervelle Cox basket with 6:30 left in the third quarter. UU responded with 16-0 run as their lead ballooned to 24.
 
CSU was unable to make any significant run in the fourth quarter. The offense managed just 12 points, allowing the Bulldogs to cruise to a 31-point victory.
 
Union converted 57.1% of its shot attempts, including a 61.9% shooting percentage from three-point range. The Lady Marauders hit a season-low 36.1% of their shot attempts.
 
Six Bulldogs scored in double-figures led by Morgan Martin's 21 points.
 
CSU was paced by Takyra Gilbert's 24 points and six assists.

The Lady Marauders will return to action this Saturday at Bellarmine.


 
 
Notes

Thursday was the first meeting between Central State and Union since the teams met in the 1992 NAIA National Tournament.
 
Returning to the team after missing the second half of last season due to injury, CSU's Takyra Gilbert has led CSU in scoring in all three games this season.
 
Thursday's contest marked the beginning of eight straight road games for the Lady Marauders.
 
Union (TN) entered the season ranked No. 2 in the nation and No. 1 in the South Region Poll. Union advanced to the NCAA Div. II Final Four last season.
