Lady Marauders fade away in second half; lose 102-73 to Bellarmine

LOUISVILLE, Kentucky – The Central State Lady Marauders lost to Bellarmine University, 102-73, on Saturday.
The loss drops the Lady Marauders to 2-2 overall while the Bellarmine Knights improve to 3-0 on the year.
Trailing by nine after the first quarter, CSU battled back to take a 36-34 lead after a Takyra Gilbert three-pointer at the 3:32 mark of the second quarter. Bellarmine responded with a 7-2 run. A Mikayla Berry basket as time expired in the first half gave the Knights a 46-43 lead at the break.
Bellarmine opened the third quarter with a 10-0 run and built the lead up to 71-56 entering the final 10 minutes of play.
CSU was unable to build any momentum in the fourth quarter while BU hit 11 of 21 shot attempts, four of six three-point attempts, and all five free throws to cruise to the 29-point win.
Five Knights scored in double-figure led by Laureen Deel's 18 points. As a team, BU converted 40 of 83 shot attempts, including eight makes from beyond the arc.
Gilbert led the Lady Marauders in scoring with 20 points along with five assists and three steals. Brooke Spaulding finished with 14 points and six rebounds. Jaeda Davis tallied 11 points, six assists and six rebounds.
The Lady Marauders will travel to play California University of Pennsylvania on Tuesday at 5:30 pm. The Vulcans are currently 3-0 and are among teams receiving votes in the NCAA Div. II National Poll.

Returning to the team after missing the second half of last season due to injury, CSU's
Takyra Gilbert has led CSU in scoring in all four games this season. She has scored 20 or more points in three of CSU's four games.
