Box Score Marauders falter down the stretch in loss to Kentucky State

FRANKFORT, Kentucky - In a rivalry game that featured 14 lead changes, the Kentucky State Thorobreds came up with crucial baskets down the stretch, beating the Central State Marauders, 86-81. in conference play on Saturday night.

Playing in a sold out Exum Center, KSU jumped out to an early 7-0 lead. By the 12:55 mark, CSU had evened things back up when Thomas Farrior slammed home a fast break dunk to tie the game, 16-16, at the 12:55 mark. CSU continued to dictate the pace in the first twenty minutes of play. Markese McGuire's three-point field goal gave CSU a 35-29 lead with 2:48 left in the half. KSU's Toussaint Shaak Rose responded with back-to-back three-pointers to bring his team within two, 37-35, at intermission.

CSU built their lead up to 43-36 by the 17:54 mark of the 2nd half. The next four minutes belonged to KSU as Dorian Jordan scored 10 of the team's next 18 points. With KSU leading 54-49 at the 13:15 mark, CSU battled back to even the score 56-56 after Jeremy Brown converted a three-point play.

The teams continued to trade baskets with neither gain any ground as the score remained knotted, 73-73, with 3:29 to go. KSU came up with two big plays as Rose converted a off-balance layup and Juliuse converted a three-point play to put the Thorobreds up 78-73 with 2:21 to play. CSU was never able to fully recover. Dymiere Finch scored to cut the lead down to two with 1:04 to play but Jordan got the friendly roll on the other end to put his team back up by two possessions. KSU iced the game with free throws from Malcolm Smith much to the chagrin of their fans in the stands.

Barton led all players with 24 points to go along with 5 rebounds. Jordan finished with 19 points and 13 assists. With the win KSU, improved to 8-14 overall and 7-7 in conference play.

Dwight Richards, Jr. led CSU with 19 points. Brown finished with 18 points and a game-high 9 rebounds. The loss drops the Marauders to a 8-17 overall mark with a 5-10 record in the SIAC.

Notes:

• With Saturday's result, CSU and KSU have split the regular season series, 1-1, with both teams holding serve on their home floor.

 

• With the win, KSU has taken a 55-54 lead in the all-time series.
