Box Score Central State unable to keep up with Miles in 41-20 loss

WILBERFORCE, Ohio – The Central State Marauders surrendered 31 points in the fourth quarter in Saturday's 41-20 loss to the Golden Bears of Miles College on Saturday.

While the overall result put a damper on CSU's homecoming celebration, Terraris Saffold delivered big plays for the home crowd of 7,000+ to get excited about. Saffold opened the scoring in the first quarter on a 44 yard delayed draw play as CSU took a 7-0 lead at the 9:50 mark.

On the next drive, Miles responded with a Nick Christiansen field goal from 25 yards out. Miles found the end zone for the first time on the day when a deflected pass landed in the hands of Antonio Lee. Lee proceeded to run 64 yards to give MC a 10-7 lead with 5:05 remaining in the first half.

After both teams traded quick three-and-outs, CSU quarterback Trent Mays engineered a 5 play-78 yard drive that ended with a 13 yard strike to Lavon Meeks. The score came with just 16 seconds left in the first half and gave CSU a 14-10 lead at intermission.

CSU added to their lead with a 21 yard field goal from Trevor Teel at the 7:50 mark of the third quarter.

In what proved to be a nightmare of a fourth quarter for the Marauders, CSU was outscored 31-3. Miles scored on Justin Hardy runs of 22 yards, 81 yards and 66 yards. The Golden Bears also returned a block punt for a touchdown to make what was a highly competitive game into a lopsided final score.
The loss dropped CSU's record to 0-6 overall and 0-3 in SIAC competition. MC improved to 3-3 with a 2-1 mark in conference play.

The game proved to be a showcase for the starting runningbacks as Hardy led Miles with 210 yards on the ground and three scores. Saffold led CSU with a career-best 197 rushing yards, one score and 213 all-purpose yards.

On the defensive side of the ball, Anthony Hardy led Miles with 11 tackles and 2 tackles for a loss. Freshman Mikey'ion Hunter led CSU in tackles for the third straight game with twelve on the afternoon.

The Marauders will prepare for a long road trip to play NCAA Div. I opponent Arkansas Pine-Bluff next Saturday.

Quotes from Head Coach Cedric Pearl

"We played a great fifty minutes. As we all know, football games are won with sixty minutes of constant effort and execution. We missed our opportunities and it costs us again this week."

"They had two big runs and we had a costly turnover early in the fourth quarter. From that point on, we let the game get away from us."

"We are going to go back to work again and continue to focus on getting back on the right track. The only thing we can do is continue to come back and continue to correct our mistakes. Our guys just have to keep working and prepare for success."
