Box Score Marauder defense shuts down Miles
WILBERFORCE, Ohio - The Central State University Marauders beat the Golden Bears of Miles College in SIACÂ defensive battle, 53-49, on Saturday afternoon.
CSU's
Frank Barber III scored the games first five points and the Marauders jumped out to an early 11-3 lead. Miles quickly responded with a 8-0 run as a Shaquille Cooke layup evened up the score, 11-11, at the 13:29 mark. Over the span of the next 11 minutes, neither team managed to pull away to a significant lead. After two free throws by Barber III put the Marauders up, 26-25, with 2:40 remaining in the first half, Miles went on a 7-0 run to take a 32-26 lead at intermission.
Miles built their lead up to 10 early and the second half, holding a 40-30 edge with 14:33 left. CSU climbed their way back into the game with defense by holding MC to just 5 points over the next 9Â minutes while three balls from
Markese McGuire,
Thomas Farrior and
Martin Oliver helped the Marauder take a 49-45 lead with 1:05 to play. CSU surrendered a Miles basket with 29 seconds to play but Barber III sealed the game by converting four straight free throws from the line and the Marauders ended a 7-game losing streak.
CSU forced Miles into 17 turnovers and held the Bears to 35% shooting from the field. No Miles player managed to score in double-figures.
Oliver, a freshman from Chicago, Illinois, has his best game as a Marauder with 14 points. Barber III finished with 13 points a 4 rebounds. While he did not score,
Jeremy Brown made a significant impact on the game with his 11 rebounds, 4 assists and 4 steals. With the victory, CSU improves to 6-10 overall with a 3-5 mark in the SIAC.
Carl Garcia led the Bears with 9 points and 8 rebounds. Miles now sits at 0-14 on the year and 0-2 in conference play.
"Our players have been practicing really hard all week and I knew they would come out and play hard tonight," CSU Head Coach
Joseph Price said. "We executed a zone defense very well and it made a difference for us. We need our guys to continue to bring the same energy moving forward as we prepare for another big conference game against Tuskegee on Monday."
