Box Score Spring Hill tops Lady Marauders thanks to last second put back

WILBERFORCE, Ohio – Thursday night's game between the Lady Marauders of Central State University and the Badgers of Spring Hill College came down to final possession to decide who would come out on top. For SHC, a put back with .1 seconds left on the clock proved to be the difference as the Badgers celebrated a 62-60 road win over CSU.

With the teams traded baskets all night long, Thursday night's game had 12 ties and 9 lead changes. The Lady Marauders managed to gain a 33-30 lead at the intermission and 44-42 at the end of the 3rd period, but Spring Hill responded with a bucket by Leah Washington at the 4:15 mark of the fourth to take a 54-52 lead. From there, the teams traded buckets down the stretch. A good free throw from CSU's Shannon DeFoe tied the game up, 60-60, with 46 seconds left. After two empty possessions by both teams, SHC found themselves with a chance to steal a win in Wilberforce. Determined to get to the lane, SHC's Jennifer Clark drove the lane with 6 seconds left and forced up a wild shot that hit the bottom of the rim, bouncing right into the waiting hands of junior center Leah Washington who quickly converted the short range put back with one-tenth of a second left on the clock. With a lack of time to get a significant shot off, CSU failed to answer as Spring Hill celebrated on the Beacom/Lewis floor.

"We expected Spring Hill to come and fight hard for a win and that is exactly what they did all the way to the end," said CSU Head Coach Sheba Harris. "We lost the rebounding battle tonight and it cost us a win tonight."

Including Washington's big rebound and put back, the Badgers outrebounded the Lady Marauders, 44-42, and held a 14-10 edge in second chance points.

Badger forward Camry Johnson led all scorers with 23 points while Washington notched a double-double with 12 points and a game-high 15 rebounds. With the win, SHC improved to 8-13 overall with a 6-6 mark in SIAC play.

For CSU, Kourtni Perry came off the bench to score 17 points while nursing a bad shoulder. Sierra Harley added 12 points. After winning five in a row, Central State has lost its last three games and stand 8-11 on the season and 4-8 in the conference.

The Lady Marauders hope to rebound on Saturday when they host Lemoyne-Owen at 1 pm.
