Box Score Late turnovers doom Marauders in loss to rival Kentucky State

FRANKFORT, Kentucky - Taking on rival Kentucky State in the first SIAC match up between the two schools, the Marauders of Central State committed costly turnovers in the closing minutes of Thursday's 64-58 loss.

Playing in a sold out Exum Center, Central State looked poised in the early stages of the game. Tre' Edwards was the best player on the floor in the opening 20 minutes, scoring 15 first half points, leading CSU to a 31-21 with 1:05 left before the break. KSU took advantage of two CSU turnovers in the final minute to cut the deficit down to 6 as the teams went into the locker room.

CSU's lead quickly evaporated in the first 4 minutes of the second half as the Thorobreds mounted a 10-2 run to go ahead 39-37 at the 16:38 mark. With the pace of play picking up, the two rivals traded baskets back-and-forth. Sean Cassidy, Jr, hit from beyond the arc at thr 12:01 mark to give CSU a 44-41 lead. Unfortunately for the Marauders, the Exum Center rims seemed to shrink in the from that point on. CSU shooters combined to hit just four of 17 field goal attempts down the stretch as KSU took advantage. Turnovers also plaqued CSU as a turnover at the 6 minute mark at mid-court led to a 4-point KSU trip at the other end. Malcolm Smith converted a layup with 4:44 left to put KSU up 57-52.Anthony Chester hit one of the rare field goals for CSU as his three pointer hit the front rim and bounced in to cut the lead down to 2 with 4 minutes left. That would be as close as CSU would come to taking the lead as the Thorobreds closed out the game with clutch free throw making.

KSU held a 27-10 advantage in points score off turnovers. The Thorobreds also held a 15-7 edge in second chance points.

Smith led all scorers with 21 points as his team improved to 9-7 overall and 7-4 in the SIAC.
