Wilberforce, OH - Another chapter in the Central State-Kentucky State rivalry was written on Tuesday night as the Marauders defeated the Thorobreds, 67-64, thanks to guard
Sterling Gilmore's game winning 3-pointer.
Playing in front of their home crowd for the first time this season, the Marauders jumped out to a 29-18 halftime lead thanks to a 9-2 run to close out the half. CSU held KSU leading scorer Ulysses Thomas III to just 4 points in the first stanza on 1 of 5 shooting from the field. The Marauder defense also forced 14 Thorobred turnovers to help build on their lead.
"You create a lot of opportunities when you force a team into turning the ball over," CSU Head Coach
Joseph Price said. "We did an excellent job of that in the first half."
The Marauders continued to pad their lead and appeared poised to cruise to the win after a
Masceo Harmon free throw put CSU up 55-40 with just over 6 minutes remaining. Up by 9 with 1:33 left in regulation, the Marauders surrendered a 9-0 run to the Thorobreds as 6'9 forward Markus Montague hit a 20 foot jumper to tie the game at 64 with 13 seconds left.
After bringing the ball up the floor, CSU used their last timeout with 5 seconds. In the proceeding inbounds play, senior forward
Raheem Lemons caught the ball and was immediately double teamed. Lemons found Gilmore, who converted the off balanced 3 pointer while being fouled by a sprawling Kentucky State defender. After Gilmore's missed free throw attempt, KSU's desperation 3 point attempt hit the front of the rim as time expired.
"It felt great to come through for my team," Gilmore said. "A lot of guys played really well tonight and it is just good to get a win."
Lemons turned in his best performance of the season thus far, finishing with 16 points, 11 rebounds, 3 blocks and 2 steals. Harmon also turned in a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds to go along with 6 assists.
Tre' Edwards chipped in with 10 points while Gilmore finished with 7 points, none bigger than his last 3.
Despite their lack of size, CSU outscored KSU, 42-22 in the paint and held a 24-6 edge in points off of turnovers.
Kentucky State, which fell to 1-3 overall, was led by Malcolm Smith's 15 points.
Winning their last 8 of 9 contests against Kentucky State, the Marauders improve to 2-2 on the season heading into this weekend's University of Indianapolis Thanksgiving Tournament.
Central State will play St. Joseph College on Friday followed by Saturday's contest against the tournament hosts.
