Central Falls Short in 6-0 battle
Central State University opened the 2009 football season with a hard fought game against the West Virginia State University Yellow Jackets Saturday afternoon. The game was in front of 791 fans that had to withstand the rain in parts of the first quarter, to a clear game from mid first to the end of the game.
Junior Quarterback, Diegue (Miami, FL, North Miami H.S.) threw for 71 yards on 9-of-26 passing and McCorkle (Columbus, OH, Marion Franklin H.S.) added 56 yards on 19 carries the offense finished with 134 total yards.
The Marauder defense led by conference player of the week, Wilson (Matteson, IL, Rich South H.S.) who had 13 tackles, 3 for loss and an interception were flying around the ball racking up as a team 18 tackles for loss and also a blocked punt by Marvell Conner. The defense also garnered three other players with double digit tackles linebacker Walker (Cincinnati, OH, Taft H.S.), safety Dockery (Muskegon Heights, MI, Muskegon High School), and safety Conner (Dayton, OH, Paul Laurence Dunbar High School) all had 10 tackles and Lewis (Indianapolis, IN, North Central H.S.)added the other interception to the defenses total. The “Dirty Defense” held the Yellow Jackets to under 300 yards total offense improving from last year.
The players feel very good about the way things are going in the right direction and our very confident going in to this weekend's clash with Virginia Union in the 5th annual Dayton Classic Sunday at 5:00 p.m. at the University of Dayton's Welcome Stadium.
