Mobile, Ala. — The Central State University women's basketball team battled to the final buzzer Thursday evening but came up just short in a 50–47 loss to Spring Hill Badgers women's basketball at the Arthur R. Outlaw Recreation Center.
Spring Hill built an early advantage behind a strong opening quarter, jumping out to a 20–9 lead. The Marauders responded in the second period, tightening defensively and trimming the deficit to 28–23 at halftime. Central State continued to apply pressure in the second half, but was unable to overcome the early gap despite a strong fourth-quarter effort.
Central State outscored the Badgers 15–7 in the final quarter and had opportunities late, but Spring Hill held on at the free-throw line to secure the three-point victory.
Calyanna Cage led the Marauders with 11 points and added three rebounds and a steal while logging 37 minutes. Viviana Clayton and Mikayla Young each scored six points off the bench, providing a spark in the second half. Kennedy Walker contributed five points and two blocks in limited minutes, while Ashyia Maddickes pulled down a team-high five rebounds and added four points.
As a team, Central State forced 18 Spring Hill turnovers and scored 16 points off those miscues while also holding a 20–10 advantage in bench points. The Marauders finished with 30 rebounds and four blocks, continuing to show defensive toughness throughout the contest.
Spring Hill was led by 12 points apiece from Jenice Adjessom and Madison Dowling, while Libby Geisler added eight points off the bench.
Despite the setback, the performance marked another competitive showing for Central State Marauders women's basketball, which continues to battle through SIAC play. The Marauders will look to build on the strong defensive effort and late momentum as they return to the court for their next conference matchup.
