Lady Marauders Dominate Second Half for big win over Simmons

The Central State Lady Marauders picked up an impressive 81-59 victory over Simmons University on January 29, 2025, at the St. Stephens Family Life Center. The Lady Marauders dominated the second half, outscoring Simmons by 18 points after holding a slim 38-27 lead at the break.

Central State started the game a bit slowly, shooting just 25% in the opening quarter, but found their rhythm as the game went on. They shot 39.5% from the field overall and 30.8% from three-point range, with an especially strong showing in the second half. Central State capitalized on their depth, with their bench contributing a remarkable 59 points, led by McCown Nadya's 16 points and 5 rebounds. McCown was a spark for the Lady Marauders, making 3-of-4 from beyond the arc.

The Lady Marauders' rebounding was a major factor in their success, securing 51 total boards compared to Simmons' 41. Laila Christmon had a standout performance with 13 rebounds to go along with her 7 points in 23 minutes. Abbigail Peterson dropped in 11 points to go with 4 rebounds and 2 assists.

Simmons was led by Asia Cochran, who had a team-high 17 points, shooting 8-of-15 from the floor. Morgan Defoor contributed 11 points despite a tough shooting night, hitting 3-of-16 from three. The Falcons had a solid third quarter, but their shooting struggles—32.4% from the field and 24.3% from three—kept them from mounting a serious challenge in the second half. They also struggled from the free-throw line, converting only 4 of 8 attempts.

Central State's defense was stifling, forcing 13 turnovers and limiting Simmons to just 59 points. The Lady Marauders controlled the points in the paint, outscoring Simmons 38-20, and capitalized on fast-break opportunities, scoring 10 points on the break.

With this win, the Lady Marauders improve to 9-9 on the season, while Simmons drops to 11-9.
