Box Score Nash leads Central State to 76-69 road win over Benedict

COLUMBIA, South Carolina – Central State sophomore Kailyn Nash scored a career-high 29 points to lead the Lady Marauders to a 76-69 road win over Benedict on Saturday.

Benedict, the reigning SIAC champion, had no answer for Nash as the sophomore forward made eight of 13 shots while drawing multiple fouls on defenders and converting 13 of 16 free throws.

Central State led for all but the opening minute of Saturday's contest. CSU outscored BC, 15-9, in the first quarter and went into the half up 32-24.
CSU maintained momentum throughout the third and increased the margin to 60-49 entering the final 10 minutes of play. Up 65-54 with 6:03 to go, baskets by Nash and Ciara Hardy sparked an 8-0 run to give the Lady Marauders its largest lead of the game, 73-56, with 4:47 to play. While only managing to score three points in the final stages of the game, CSU remained in control as turnovers and missed free throws halted any chance of a Benedict comeback.

Led by Nash's efforts from the line, CSU converted 19 of 28 free throw attempts while BC made 10 of 18 shots. CSU also edged BC in rebounds, 49-42.

In addition to Nash, CSU senior Laurene Tere recorded 12 points and led the team with eight rebounds and three steals. Abbigail Peterson finished with 11 points and four rebounds in the win.

With the victory, CSU improves to 2-4 overall with a 2-1 mark in SIAC play. BC drops to 2-6 on the year and 0-3 in the SIAC.

CSU plays at Allen University on Monday at 5:30 pm.
