Chervelle Cox leads Central State to 86-79 overtime win over Clark Atlanta

Chervelle Cox helps Central State advance with 86-79 overtime win over Clark Atlanta

BIRMINGHAM, Alabama – In a rematch of last year's SIAC Championship, the Central State Lady Marauders edged the Clark Atlanta Panthers in overtime, 86-79, in Tuesday night's opening round of the SIAC tournament.

On her way to a career night, CSU senior forward Chervelle Cox scored six quick points as the Lady Marauders jumped out to a 10-0 lead. CSU dictated the pace in the first quarter and took a 19-5 lead after the first 10 minutes of play.

Trailing by as many as 16 in the second quarter, the defending SIAC champion Clark Atlanta stormed back into the game thanks to three straight three-point field goals from Nailah Mitchell. A free throw from Reagan Jackson capped off a 10-0 CAU run as CSU took a 37-31 lead at halftime.

Cox scored CSU's first two basket in the third quarter but CAU countered by making four its first five field goals in the second half to cut the deficit down to three, 46-43. Cox scored again to put CSU up by five but picked up her fourth foul with 2:59 remaining in the third quarter. With their top post player forced to sit, CSU's lead dwindled down to two, 51-49, by the end of the third period.

CAU took its first lead at the six minute mark of the fourth quarter as baskets by Briana McGhee and Jackson gave the Panthers a 54-53 advantage. In the final six minutes of the game, the two teams swapped the lead on 10 occasions. A three-point play by Falon Edwards gave CSU the 65-64 edge inside of a minute remaining in regulation. Mitchell answered for CAU with a three-point play of her own. Cox came back up with a layup and free throw after being set-up by point guard Takyra Gilbert with 32 seconds on the clock to give CSU the one-point lead with 30 seconds left. CAU's Jackson came right back by converting a contested layin with 8 seconds showing on the clock. After a CSU turnover, CAU's Jazmin Smith was fouled and sent to the line with 3.6 seconds remaining the quarter. Smith failed on both her attempts giving CSU one last possession.

CSU called on its SIAC All-Conference guard Takyra Gilbert, who drove to the lane and drew the foul with 0.6 seconds to go. Gilbert calmly sank her first free throw attempt but the second shot rimmed out as the game went into overtime.

Disappointed by the late miss from the free throw line, Gilbert and her teammates quickly regained their confidence thanks to a spark provided by reserve Sandra Guilford. Guilford scored six straight points as CSU opened the extra period on a 10-2 run. CAU pulled back with four points after a Mitchell three-pointer made the score 82-78 with 35 seconds left but CSU ended any hope of a CAU comeback as Bri'elle Johnson knocked down both of her free throws to seal the victory.

Led by Cox, CSU scored a season-high 50 points in the paint compared to CAU's 36.

Cox finished the game with a career-high 27 points to go along with 17 rebounds and two blocked shots. Edwards scored 20 points, collected nine rebounds and dished out six assists. Gilbert facilitated the CSU offense with a game-high 11 assists to go along with nine points. Guilford scored 10 points off the bench as CSU advanced to the next round of the SIAC tournament.

Jackson led CAU with a game-high 28 points. Mitchell finished with 24 points and eight rebounds.

CSU will play LeMoyne-Owen on Thursday in the SIAC quarterfinals.

Quotes from Head Coach LaTonya McDole

"I am proud of our ladies for continuing to fight and do whatever it took to win tonight."

"We did a great job of converting inside tonight. Chervelle and Falon were very efficient under the basket and it paid off with a win against a defending champion in Clark Atlanta."

"We have played with nine players throughout the second half of the season. With one player out tonight to tend to personal matters at home, we had to manage with eight active players. Despite the foul trouble, I thought our players did a great job of maintaining a high level of energy on the floor. We will be back to dressing nine on Thursday and will spend the next 24 hours preparing for LeMoyne-Owen."
