Lady Marauders beat Palm Beach Atlantic to split southern road trip

BOCA RATON, Florida – The Central State Lady Marauders defeated Palm Beach Atlanta, 62-56, on Saturday to split their weekend trip to Florida.

Bouncing back from Friday night's 80-71 loss to Lynn, CSU is now 1-1 on the season. PBA dropped to 0-2 overall.

CSU fell behind by double-digits early on, trailing 14-4 with 3:28 to play in the first quarter. The CSU defense stepped up and CSU closed the opening 10 minutes on a 6-1 run to narrow the lead to five. CSU took the lead midway through the second period on a fastbreak basket from
Sandra Guilford.and remained ahead, 28-25, at halftime.

PBA remained within striking distance as the teams traded baskets throughout the third quarter with CSU clinging to a 42-40 lead entering the final 10 minutes. CSU took a 47-42 lead early in the final quarter on a
Tamara Olverson layup. PBA responded with a 9-2 run to take a two-point lead with 4:39 remaining.

Takyra Gilbert's three-pointer gave the lead right back to the Lady Marauders on the next possession and sparked a 9-0 run. Up 58-51 with 1:30 remaining, CSU finished the game converting four of six free throws to help seal the victory.

Junior guard
Brooke Spaulding led CSU with 17 points while
Bri'elle Johnson scored 15. Gilbert added eight points in the win.

CSU, who struggled from the line on Friday, bounced back with a respectable 71% conversion rate (27-38). CSU also recorded 10 steals and held a 31-20 edge in points scored off turnovers.

CSU will return to action on Wednesday at Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan.
