Lady Marauders struggle to score in loss to Benedict

COLUMBIA, South Carolina – The Lady Marauders of Central State struggled offensively in a 69-49 conference loss to Benedict College on Wednesday night.

The loss drops CSU to 5-9 overall with a 3-4 mark in SIAC play. BC boosts their record to 10-4 on the season with a SIAC East Division best 5-0 mark.

Ay'Anna Bey opened up the night scoring eight of Benedict's 13 first quarter points as the Tigers took a 13-10 lead. CSU jumped ahead by four early in the second quarter with a 7-0 run capped off by a
Chervelle Cox jump shot. BC responded as Jasmine Gholson drained a three-pointer to spark a 10-0 run for BC. At the end of 20 minutes, CSU trailed BC, 23-20.

BC claimed momentum midway through the third quarter with a 12-1 run to take a 39-27 lead with 2:39 left in the period. Gholson poured in two more shots from beyond the arc allowing BC to take a 45-31 lead into the fourth quarter.

Making just five of 15 shot attempts in the fourth period, CSU was unable to cut into the deficit as BC cruised to the 20-point victory.

The Lady Marauders finished the game shooting a season-low 18.5% from the field. Benedict converted on 45.3% of its shot attempts.

Bey led all players with 27 points and 16 rebounds. Gholson finished with 14 points.

Jaeda Davis went seven for seven from the free throw line and led CSU scorers with 15 points.

CSU will travel to Florida on Friday to play NCAA Div. I program Stetson University at 7 pm.
