Tuskegee outlasts Lady Marauders in overtime, 72-69

TUSKEGEE, Alabama – The Lady Marauders of Central State lost to Tuskegee, 72-69, in overtime on Monday night

With the loss, the Lady Marauders fall to a record of 5-12 overall with a 3-6 ledger in the SIAC. Tuskegee improves to 11-4 overall with an SIAC West Division leading 7-1 mark.

CSU's led dwindled down to one, 20-19, midway through the second quarter. The Lady Marauders quickly regained their form with a 12-0 run capped by back-to-back
Falon Edwards baskets to go up 31-19. Similar to the way the first frame ended, TU ended the half with a 7-0 run as Alexis Carter hit a three-pointer as time expired to bring her team within five, 31-26, at intermission.

TU knocked the CSU lead down to two, 39-37, by the 4:35 mark of the third quarter. Back-to-back three-point makes from
Daesjah Ely helped CSU build its lead back up to double-figures, 49-39. At the end of 30 minutes, CSU took a 52-43 lead into the fourth quarter.

In the first five minutes of the final period, CSU managed just two points while allowing TU to pull within three, 54-51. Carter would eventually cut the deficit down to one with 1:53 on the clock. and TU took its first lead, 59-58, with two free throws from Normesha Pitts with 41 seconds left in regulation.

After CSU came up empty on its next offensive possession, India Blakely knocked down two more free throws to give TU a 61-58 lead. On the next trip down the floor, Gilbert sent the game to overtime with a step back three-pointer to quiet the TU fans.

While the gymnasium was stunned by Gilbert's clutch shot, Carter kept her poise and went on to score seven of her team's 11 points in overtime. Up by three with 17 seconds left, the TU defense sealed the victory by forcing Gilbert into a low-percentage shot that came up short as time expired.

Carter led TU with 27 points while grabbing 10 rebounds. Shelle Daniels finished with 15 points and 14 rebounds.

CSU was paced by Gilbert, who finished with 16 points, seven assists, six rebounds, and four steals. Edwards and
Jaeda Davis chipped in with 12 points each. Ely came off the bench to score 11 points.

CSU will return home to face defending SIAC West Division champion Spring Hill on Saturday at 1 pm.
