Box Score Lady Marauders outlast Spring Hill for eleventh straight victory

MOBILE, Alabama - The Lady Marauders of Central State University extended their winning streak to eleven games, beating the Spring Hill Badgers, 76-70, on Saturday afternoon.

CSU jumped out to a 17-10 lead midway through the 1st quarter but Jewel Hill and the Badgers caught fire from the field. Hill closed the quarter by scoring 9 points to lead her team on a 13-0 run to take a 23-17 lead. A Falon Edwards free throw at the 9:45 mark of the 2nd quarter finally broke the scoreless drought for the Lady Marauders, but Hill added another 5 points and a Leah Washington lay-in gave SHC a 30-18 lead at the 6:50 mark. SHC maintained a double-digit lead until free throws from Rahni Bell and a Brianye' Copeland three-pointer cut the Spring Hill lead down to 6 at intermission.

CSU kept pace with SHC in the 3rd quarter but were unable to gain any ground, trailing 54-48 entering the 4th period. After an Elise Reilly basket put the Badgers up, 56-48, with 9:08 to play. CSU shutdown the Badger scoring while the offense found its mark. CSU went on a 15-0 run capped off by a Copeland three pointer to put the Lady Marauders up, 63-56, with 4:37 remaining. CSU remained in control until Reilly hit from beyond the arc to bring her team within three with 1:09 left in the game. After a defensive stop, SHC cut the CSU lead down to 68-67 after two Reilly free throws. With 23 seconds left, Sierra Harley split a pair of free throws to put CSU up, 69-67. The Lady Marauders came up with a big stop on defense and sealed the game with clutch free throw shooting. Led by Copeland and Harley, CSU converted 8 of 10 free throw attempts on their way to victory.

Central State recorded 19 steals and forced Spring Hill into 34 turnovers. CSU turned the SHC miscues into 36 points. The Lady Marauders also held an 18-6 edge in second chance points. The CSU bench outscored the SHC reserves 26-12.

Harley scored 14 of her team-high 18 points in the second half. She also grabbed 5 rebounds and recorded 3 assists. Copeland came off the bench to finish with 12 points and 4 steals. Ghameerah McCullers and Mustafa Notter chipped in with 11 points each. The win moves CSU to a 14-5 overall record and a 9-2 mark in SIAC play.

Hill led Spring Hill's efforts with a game high 23 points. The loss drops SHC to 11-9 on the year with a 6-5 ledger in the conference.

- The Lady Marauders are enjoying their longest winning streak since the 2005 season.

- Improving to 9-2 in SIAC competition, CSU is currently in 1st place in the SIAC West Division standings. Miles in the closest team to CSU with a 5-4 mark in conference play.

- CSU is currently ranked No. 6 in NCAA Div. II with 14.5 steals per game.

- CSU is currently among teams receiving votes in the South Div. II Regional Poll. 

- CSU traveled over 778 miles to play at Spring Hill.
