Box Score Lady Marauders come up short against Salem

WILBERFORCE, Ohio - The Central State Lady Marauders dropped their season opening game to the Tigers of Salem University, 75-69, on Saturday.

SU shot 49% from the field compared to CSU's 30% shooting performance.

CSU started the game off strong, claiming a 12-3 lead midway through the first quarter. Salem battled back to cut the deficit down, 21-17, at the end of the quarter. The Tigers took their first lead, 26-23, after a Keishia Gilmore three-pointer at the 5:09 mark of the second quarter. Gilmore's three ball sparked a 8-0 run as Salem lead 31-23 with 4:09 remaining in the first half. CSU responded with an 11-2 run to end the half, claiming a 34-33 lead at intermission.

Neither teamed managed to pull away in the third quarter as a barrage of whistles and game stoppages hindered the pace of play. While the officials were routinely signaling to the scorer's table, Salem outscored CSU, 19-17, in the third frame to take a 52-51 lead into the fourth quarter.

CSU 's foul troubles began to take their toll on the team in the fourth as key players Destinee Russell and Chavon Banks each departed early with five fouls. While shorthanded, the Lady Marauders continued to stay in the game. Sierra Harley hit from beyond the arc to put the Lady Marauders up, 65-64, with 2:55 left to play. From that point on, the CSU rim seemed to shrink as the Lady Marauders converted just 1 of 8 field goals down the stretch. Salem took full advantage of CSU's stagnant point production by outscoring CSU, 11-5, in the final two minutes of the game to come out with a victory.

Isis Mance paced the Tigers with a game-high 19 points and 10 rebounds. Gilmore added 16 points and 5 assists.

Harley led CSU's efforts with 15 points, 5 assists and 5 rebounds. Limited to 19 minutes of playing time due to foul issues, Banks still managed to record a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds.

The Lady Marauders will try to bounce back on Sunday when they host Ohio Valley in the final game of the Theresa Check Tip-Off Classic. The game is scheduled to start at 4:30 pm.

Quotable – Coach Lewis Shine

"We just have to bounce back. We weren't able to play our brand of basketball today. We will look at film and get ready for a quick turnaround tomorrow."

"We had multiple opportunities to take the lead but we took some low percentage shots. We will talk about our shot selection and other mistakes at tomorrow morning's shoot-around and get ready to fight for a win tomorrow."

"We turn our focus to a Ohio Valley team that beat us on our court last season."
