Box Score Lady Marauders' comeback attempt falls short in loss to LeMoyne-Owen
MEMPHIS, Tennessee – The Lady Marauders of Central State came back from ten down to take a lead with 5:19 left in Saturday night's SIAC action against LeMoyne-Owen before the Magicians regained momentum late to win, 71-67.
Rachel Hughes has the hot hand for the Magicians early on, scoring 11 points in the first half. Maraja Johnson and Montique Mitchell each had 8 as LeMoyne-Owen took a 37-27 lead at halftime.
LeMoyne-Owen ballooned their lead up to 15 after a Johnson layup. CSU slowly chopped into the LOC lead, cutting the deficit down to 5 by the end of the third quarter. Back-to-back baskets from Jordyn Bond brought CSU within one, 61-60, with 6:13 to play. Meshia Smith hit from beyond the arc with 5:19 left to give CSU its first lead, 63-61, since the early stages of the first quarter. LeMoyne-Owen answered with an 8-1 run to take a 69-64 lead with 57 seconds to play. Smith hit again for CSU to bring her team back within 2 with 47 seconds left but that would be all from the CSU offense as LOC went on to win, 71-67.
With the victory, LeMoyne-Owen improved to 7-18 overall and 5-12 in SIAC play. Johnson led the Magicians with 17 points and 6 steals.
The Lady Marauders were paced by Jordyn Bond's 13 points. Saturday's loss dropped CSU to 12-13 overall and a 5-10 mark in conference play.
Central State concludes the regular season on Monday in Jackson, TN against Lane College.
