WILBERFORCE, Ohio – The Thorobrettes of Kentucky State swept the season series over the Central State Lady Marauders with a 56-51 win on Saturday night.
Playing in a sold out Beacom/Lewis Gymnasium, the Marauders opened the game on a 7-2 run and led 17-14 at the end of the first quarter. Shaia Horton got things going for KSU with 17 first half points and free throws from Alexis Stallard gave KSU their first lead, 24-23, with 3:48 left in the half. Taylor Sanders put KSU up 2 with 57 seconds left. Kayla Horn answered for CSU on the other end as the teams went into the locker rooms tied, 29-29.
Similar to the previous game against KSU, CSU struggled to score in the third quarter, managing just 5 points. Kentucky State took advantage the CSU scoring drought and built their lead to 9. KSU maintained a comfortable lead for the majority of the fourth period. A Logan Powell free throw put the Thorobrettes up 7 with 2:22 to play. Meshia Smith gave CSU life with a three point play and Shannon DeFoe converted a tough bucket in the paint to bring CSU to within 2 with 31 seconds left. Horton split a pair of free throws on the other end to put her team up by three. Unable to put the game away on the line, Horton used her defensive ability to help seal the win for KSU by blocking a potential game-tying three pointer from Sierra Harley with 9 seconds to go. Joymesia Howard added a basket at the end of the game to give KSU the 5-point win.
KSU shot 52% from the field compared to a 36% performance from the Marauders.
Horton finished with 20 points, 3 blocks and 3 steals as the Thorobrettes improved to 18-3 overall and a SIAC West best 12-2 mark.
Jordyn Bond led CSU with 14 points. Harley, who suffered a ankle sprain midway through the second quarter, managed 10 points, 6 rebounds and 4 assists. The loss drops CSU to a 10-12 ledger with a 5-9 mark in conference play.
