Box Score Cedarville Yellow Jackets sting Lady Marauders, 77-71
CEDARVILLE, Ohio - The Central State Lady Marauders suffered a 77-71 road loss to the Yellow Jackets of Cedarville on Tuesday night.
With the two campuses separated by less than 5.4 miles, Tuesday night's meeting was marked the forty-third time the two programs from Greene County met on the hardwood. The Yellow Jacket shooter got off to a hot start, shooting nearly 59% in the first quarter as Cedarville took a 22-15 lead after the first ten minutes of play. The Lady Marauders battled back as
Sierra Harley and
Ghameerah McCullers combined for 16 of CSU's 21 points in the second quarter, cutting the deficit down, 39-36, at halftime.
Harley and
Tamara Sellers hit back-to-back three pointers to spark a 11-2 run midway through the third quarter to give CSU its first lead, 49-47, at the 5:01 mark. Sellers hit from beyond the arc again to give CSU its largest lead, 57-52, with 36 seconds left in the third. Cedarville quickly answered with a three ball from Baylee Bennett to cut the Marauder lead to 57-55 heading into the final ten minutes of play.
The teams traded baskets for the first six minutes of the fourth with CSU maintaining a 69-67 lead. Unfortunately for the Lady Marauders, the rims in the Callen Center seemed to shrink in the final 3:21 of the game as CSU managed just one field goal. CSU's scoring struggles opened the door for Cedarville to finish the game on a 10-2 run en route to the six point victory.
Cedarville capitalized off Lady Marauder miscues, holding a 18-9 edge in points scored off of turnovers. CU also outscored CSU in the paint, 32-18. The Yellow Jackets also went to line 26 times and converted 16 attempts. CSU was just 3 for 7 from the free throw line.
All five CU starters scored in double-figures led by Regina Hochstetler's 19 points. The Yellow Jackets improved to 2-3 overall.
Despite the loss, the Lady Marauders were encouraged by the play of junior guard Harley and McCullers, who each finished with season highs in points. Harley led CSU with 18 points, making 6 of 9 shot attempts. McCullers was 8 of 16 from the field and finished with 17 points. Sellers, the reigning SIAC Newcomer of the Week, finished the night with 14 points.
With the loss, Central State fell to 2-2 overall.Â
The Lady Marauders will have a week off to prepare for their first conference game next Tuesday when they travel to South Carolina to play Claflin University at 5:30 pm.
