CEDARVILLE, Ohio - Competing in the G-MAC Outdoor Championship at nearby Cedarville University, the Central State men's track and field team took the top spot in 6 events while finishing in 3rd place as a team with 108 points.
Darin Gooch was selected as the G-MAC Outdoor Track Athlete of the Year and Freshman of the Year after top performances in the long jump, 100 meter dash, 200 meter dash. His leap of 6.65 meters was good for 1st place and 10 points for his team as was his time of 10.94 in the 100m. His pace of 22.88 seconds in the 200m earned a 3rd place finish and 6 points. Gooch also helped the 4x100 meter relay team to a win with a time of 43.426, edging Trevecca Nazarene by a 3.5 seconds. Gooch and the CSU relay team finished 2nd in the 4x400m behind G-MAC Champion Cedarville University. Combining all events he competed in, Gooch earned the most points of any athlete at the event with 44.
Denzel Peters and Romario McKenzie also had tremendous showings in their events. Â Peters took the crown in the 400 meter hurdles with a time of 55.74 seconds. He also won the 110m with a mark of 15.03 seconds. McKenzie won the 200 meter dash with a time of 22.22 seconds and finished 3
rd in the 100 meter dash with a pace of 11.01 seconds.
Demetrius Williams,
Jamal Robinson and
Jordan Brown were also crucial for the Marauders' team totals. Williams, who teamed up with Gooch, Peters and McKenzie on both CSU relay teams, posted a 4
th place result in the 100 meter dash and a 5
th place finish in the 200m. Robinson's toss of 13.20 meters in the shot put was good for 2
nd in the event while Brown tied for 3
rd place with a heave of 11.70 meter.
Cedarville won the team crown for the second straight year with 228 team points. Alderson Broaddus came in second with 128 points.
For CSU, Saturday marked the final time of competion in the G-MAC Championships as the University will become full members of the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference next season.
