Lady Marauders beat Paine for first SIAC victory

Box Score Lady Marauders earn first SIAC win against Paine
 
WILBERORCE, Ohio – After a loss to No. 25 Benedict on Thursday, Central State successfully rebounded with a 75-60 win over Paine in SIAC play on Saturday.

CSU maintained a firm grip on the game throughout the afternoon. Central State opened up the afternoon with a 12-2 run and led 16-7 at the end of the opening stanza. Jordyn Bond opened the second half with a quick 5 points to put the Lady Marauders up by 16 in the 2nd quarter and a layup by Brianye' Copeland gave CSU its largest lead of 22 with 4:02 to go in the half. Bond finished the first half with 14 points as the Marauders took a 40-24 lead into the break.

A sluggish 3rd quarter by CSU cause the lead to dwindle down to 11 going into the fourth and Paine continued to chip away in the opening minutes of the fourth quarter to narrow the deficit to 9 with 4:23 remaining. With the Lions within striking distance, CSU stepped its intensity on the defensive side of the ball down the stretch, holding Paine to just 7 points in the final 4 minutes. On offense, the Lady Marauders converted 5 of 7 shot attempts to close out the game.

The CSU starting five accounted for 57 of the team's 75 points. Bond set the pace for CSU with 18 points to go along with 6 rebounds and 5 assists. Kourtni Perry recorded 11 points and 11 rebounds. Ghameerah McCullers and Shannon DeFoe chipped in with 10 points a piece as CSU improved to 3-4 overall and 1-1 in the SIAC.

Paine's Janisha Wilkerson finished with a game-high 29 points and 15 rebounds. She was the only PC player to ecplipse double-figures in scoring as the Lions fell to 1-7 on the season and 0-2 in the conference.

Central State plays the final game before the holidays this Monday when Claflin visits Beacom/Lewis Gymnasium. The teams will tip off the action at 5:30 pm.
