Box Score CSU quiets Bulldogs with 79-68 winWilberforce, OH - The Central State women's basketball team avenged last season's 99-95 loss to rival Wilberforce with a convincing 79-68 victory against the Bulldogs on Monday night.
The Lady Marauders snapped a 3 game losing streak with Monday's win and are now 4-11 on the season.
Things went Wilberforce's way early on as the Bulldogs shooters connected on 3 of their first 5 open looks from the three point line to take an early 11-6 lead at the 15:10 mark of the first period. CSU responded with a 11-2 run to capture a 19-14 lead after a fastbreak layup by
Iniquia Snell at the 12:00 minute mark. From that point on, CSU never looked back, taking a 42-34 lead into the locker room.
CSU never trailed in the second half. A good three pointer by Wilberforce's Cortland Miller cut the deficit to 54-49 but that would be as close as the Bulldogs would get as CSU's
Jasmine Cooper poured in 11 of her 14 points in the second half to lead her team to the 11 point win.
A big factor in the outcome was CSU's ability to ake advantage of its size, outscoring the Bulldgos 40-20 in the paint.
The CSU frontcourt combination of
Kourtni Perry and
Amanda Pierce combined for 31 points, 17 rebounds and 3 blocks. Perry finished with a team best 16 points on the night. Cooper collected her third double-double of the year by snatching 11 rebounds.
Demetria Nunley-Lash came off the bench to score 12 points. Guard
Iniquia Snell contributed with 10 points.
The Bulldogs were led by a 20 point performance from Mullins. Wilberforce fell to 2-17 on the season.
The Lady Marauders will try to put back-to-back wins together for the first time this season thus Thursday when the team travels to Salem International University.
