Layphane Carnagie is from the beautiful island of Jamaica. She came to Central State University (CSU) on a full Track and Field scholarship in 1991. She was a member of the CSU track and field team where they won four National Championships in the NAIA division. She had the third fastest 55-meter dash between 1981 and 1993.

In 1993, the team was invited to the White House, where they met President Bill Clinton because of their outstanding sports program. While attending CSU, she studied business administration with an emphasis in hospitality management, earning her undergraduate degree in 1995.

Later, she made the decision to join the United States Army in 1999, serving at various Army posts in the US and being deployed to Tikrit, Iraq, for one year during Operation Enduring Freedom. In 2010, she earned a Master’s in Business Administration (MBA). A disabled veteran, she has continued to serve her country and fellow veterans as an employee of the Central Arkansas Veterans Healthcare System (CAVHS) in Little Rock, Arkansas.

She has a daughter, Adia Carnagie, who is currently enrolled as a senior at CSU. Layphane strongly believes in and instills the values of faith and perseverance in her daughter, embracing the belief: “I can do all things through Christ which strengthens me.”
